Algology
Algology is a branch of medicine that is concerned with the study of pain that includes chronic pain of all kinds as well as severe pain with no known cause.
After specific examinations are conducted by the experts, a personalized approach is followed to treat pain according to what is best for the patients. In treating chronic pain, we have multiple methods especially with invasive pain. Using radio waves nerve blocks are made, the installation of permanent morphine pumps or spinal cord cells, waist and neck injections are administered in the hernia, injection made into the drive, permanent port-pump systems.
Chronic pain can overtake a patient’s complete life, for that reason it needs the collaboration of many different fields of medicine. Other types of treatments to be carried out for the invasive pain are:
- Acupuncture and trigger point injections.
- Epidural/foraminal steroid injections and epidural lysis used in ruptured disks in the lower back and neck.
- Radiofrequency thermocoagulation which is a method to desensitize pain-remitting nerves with a special device.
- Neurolytic blocks which is a method to desensitize nerves with special drugs in pains associated with cancer and neuralgia.
- Nucleoplasty, vertebroplasty and spinal battery or spinal pumps that are called advanced invasive methods.
The algology department treats the following pains:
- Headaches
- Facial pain
- Neuralgia
- Spine pain
- Shoulder – arm pain
- Pains associated with vascular occlusion
- Pains of neuropathic origin
- Cancer pain
- Unidentified pain
Algology; It is the field of medicine that deals with the treatment of pain that cannot be solved in the society, cannot be managed and the cause of which is unknown.
Algology has a wide range from drug therapy, which we define as medical therapy, to interventional therapy. Today, while the drugs produced with the developments in the pharmaceutical industry play an important role in the treatment of patients’ pain; The treatment of patients whose pain cannot be relieved by conventional drug therapy is carried out by an “algologist”, that is, a “pain doctor” who has received special training in this regard.
These methods must be performed by experienced algologists by visualizing bones, nerves and surrounding tissues, accompanied by imaging methods such as x-ray device (fluoroscopy), ultrasound, computed tomography or MR.
All of the personnel I came in contact with, went above and beyond to help me with my medical problems. I am now enjoying a more active lifestyle and no longer feel the discomfort in chest.
